Activated Carbon for Semiconductor Ultrapure Water (UPW)

Ultrapure water (UPW) is an essential raw material for semiconductor wafer manufacturing. Even trace organic pollutants, residual chlorine and chloramines can cause defects on wafer surfaces and damage precision filtration & reverse osmosis membranes. High-grade activated carbon acts as a key pretreatment media in UPW production lines, eliminating organic contaminants and oxidizing substances before water enters RO and ion-exchange polishing units.

Our low-ash, ultra-pure activated carbon is specially produced for semiconductor UPW projects, with extremely low heavy metal leaching and minimal particle shedding, suitable for strict cleanroom water preparation systems.

Core Application Scenarios

  1. UPW Pre-Treatment for Wafer Fabrication Remove free chlorine, chloramines and soluble organic matter from raw feed water. Protect reverse osmosis membranes against oxidative degradation and reduce TOC load for subsequent polishing stages.
  2. TOC Reduction for Ultrapure Water Loops Adsorb dissolved organic carbon to lower TOC values. Low TOC level is critical to avoid micro-contamination on silicon wafers during etching, cleaning and photolithography processes.
  3. Removal of Pesticides & Trace Micropollutants Capture trace organic micropollutants from municipal source water, preventing these contaminants from entering the ultrapure water circulation loop.
  4. Recycle Water Treatment in Fab Plants Polish wastewater recycled from wafer cleaning processes, remove residual organics and odor to increase water reuse rate and reduce fab water consumption.
  5. Protect Ion Exchange & EDI Modules Cut organic fouling risk for EDI and mixed bed ion exchange resins, extend service life and reduce replacement frequency of high-cost polishing media.

Why Choose Our Activated Carbon for Semiconductor UPW

  • Ultra-low heavy metal and ash content, negligible ion leaching
  • Low particle shedding, less fine debris to block downstream filters
  • Optimized pore structure for efficient TOC and chlorine adsorption
  • Acid washed purification treatment, meets semiconductor water standards
  • Strict batch quality control with full COA documentation
  • Stable performance for continuous 24/7 operation of chip fabrication plants

How It Works

Raw water flows through the activated carbon filter bed. Residual chlorine is catalytically decomposed, while organic molecules are trapped by physical adsorption inside carbon pores. The treated water with lowered TOC and no free chlorine then enters RO and EDI polishing to reach ultrapure water specification required for semiconductor manufacturing.
